Lumbar spinal stenosis often known as “Shopping Cart Syndrome”

The “shopping cart” sign is indicative of lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition in which the space within the spinal canal become too narrow which can put pressure on the spinal cord and irritate the spinal nerves branching off it. The lumbar spine consists of 5 vertebrae in the lower back (L1 through L5) and are the largest bones in the entire spine carrying most of our body’s weight and doing the most flexing and extending. As the spinal canal starts to narrow, it doesn’t give the nerves enough space and starts to feel pinched, compressed, and irritated leading to pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and abnormal reflexes. This causes increased lower back and/or leg pain which is often alleviated by hunching over a “shopping cart” to help relieve the pressure.
