Read the Patient Testimonial below from Allan Mellan, a patient of Dr. Ungar’s, who suffered drop foot.
Treating Patients With Foot Drop/Drop Foot
Drop Foot is characterized by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot due to weakened or paralyzed muscles responsible for dorsiflexion. It can result from nerve damage (such as from injury or conditions like diabetes), muscle disorders (like muscular dystrophy), stroke, or spinal cord injury.
Electrical Stimulation for Drop Foot (EcST) is a non- invasive method that uses electrical currents to stimulated the affected muscles or nerves. By activating the muscles responsible for lifting the foot (such as the tibialis anterior) or the peroneal nerve, EcST helps improve muscle strength and coordination, thereby enhancing dorsiflexion and walking ability. The approach not only improves gait and mobility but also helps prevent muscle atrophy, making it a beneficial option for managing drop foot and improving overall quality of life.
Patient Testimonial
“My name is Allan Mellan and I am a professional caddy on the Champions Tour. At the end of Dec. 2019, I developed drop foot. It was bad enough I couldn’t entertain the idea of going back to work. As luck would have it, Dr. Ungar obtained the RST-SANEXAS neoGEN® machine in the middle of Jan 2020. Before I completed my 24 treatment program, I went back to work. If not for Dr. Ungar, his staff at INTEGRATED MEDICINE OF OHIO and the neoGEN® device, this would not have happened! I highly recommend this treatment
program.“ – Allan Mellan
Frequently Asked Questions
Q… What do I need to look for when treating drop foot? How do I know which placement to utilize?
A…1. Consider severity – do they have any motor function on their own? Is their issue only dorsi flexion or both dorsi and plantar flexion? If they do not show an apparent calf atrophy or severe weakness in the calf, then stick with the linear drop foot approach first.
2. Make sure you have two corresponding electrodes on the motor end plate and the top of the ankle. These are the primary electrodes for the dorsi flexion response.
3. Are they able to achieve a motor threshold with the treatment? Can you see a twitch response? If not, consider the additional back down placement options to focus more on the firing of the motor nerves and establishing that rather than focusing on the strengthening.
